About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am Vivienne, living in the UK and married with a son who now lives in Perth, Australia and a daughter who has given me two gorgeous grandsons! Paint Shop has been my hobby for more years than I can remember and I love making tags. I have always loved doing tutorials written by others and a couple of years ago started writing them myself. As well as tag tutorials, I also have a Tips and Tricks page where you will find tutorials on basic Paint Shop techniques. I hope you enjoy my blog and have fun with my tutorials. Please be sure also to check out the Tag Gallery and see some of the awesome results to the tutorials!

In this tutorial I used the art of
You need a license to use Jeff’s art, available at

I used the freebie sampler kit “The Darkest Night” from
(use the search facility to find the kit).

I used mask 498 from

The animation is done in Paint Shop but you  will need
Animation Shop to put it together.

Font of choice.

Unless noted, I used a drop shadow of vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 85, blur 10.

Open a new transparent canvas 650 by 600 and fill with white.

Make a new layer, select all, paste paper 3 into the selection, deselect and apply the mask, resize 75%.

Paste the mesh, resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow but with horizontal set to 2 and opacity to 5.

Paste the tabback, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow (remember to change the settings).

Paste frame 1, resize 35%, rotate 20 degrees to the left and place in position.  Select the interior of the frame with your magic wand, expand the selection by 7, make a new layer below it and paste paper 4 into the selection, deselect and apply the drop shadow to the frame.

Paste the moon, resize 40% and position between the frame and the paper.

Paste the staple above the frame, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste frame 2 (it’s very big, you won’t see it), resize 7%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the tube, resize 55%, drag below frame 2, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste leaves, resize 90%, rotate 50 degrees to the left and drag below the tube, duplicate, rotate the duplicate 40 degrees to the right, place in position, erase any that shows at the bottom and apply the drop shadow to each.

Paste the moss and bring to the top, mirror and flip, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the pin, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the lamp, resize 35%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the rose, resize 20% and position behind the lamp, duplicate, mirror the duplicate and resize it another 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow to each.

Paste rope, mirror, resize 45% and rotate 10 degrees to the left, drag below the roses, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the beads, resize 45%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste knot on the top, resize 25%, position on the lamp and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the scatter, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the sparkles, resize 60%, place in position and erase any out that don’t look good on the tube.

Check your layers and make any necessary adjustments, then crop your tag and add your copyright information and text.  If you are not continuing with the animation, export your tag on a transparent background as a png.

Animation:

Duplicate the tube and close off the original copy.  Open your Warp tool, set the mode to “Expand” and change the size to 100.  Hold your cursor in the middle of the cats mouth and click very quickly a couple of times.  Using the Warp tool makes things a little blurry so you need to sharpen it back up so open your Sharpen tool, set the size to the same size as the Warp tool and click once in the same place.

Right click on your tag,  “Copy merged” and paste in Animation Shop “As a new animation”.  Back in Paint Shop, close off this copy of the tube and open the original, again copy merged and paste in Animation Shop “Before current frame”.  Change the frame properties on the first frame to 40 and on the second frame to 80 (Animation – Frame properties) then run your tag through the Optimization Wizard and save as a gif.
