About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am Vivienne, living in the UK and married with a son who now lives in Perth, Australia and a daughter who has given me two gorgeous grandsons! Paint Shop has been my hobby for more years than I can remember and I love making tags. I have always loved doing tutorials written by others and a couple of years ago started writing them myself. As well as tag tutorials, I also have a Tips and Tricks page where you will find tutorials on basic Paint Shop techniques. I hope you enjoy my blog and have fun with my tutorials. Please be sure also to check out the Tag Gallery and see some of the awesome results to the tutorials!

In this tutorial I used the art of Elias Chatzoudis.
You need a license to use Elias’ art,
you can get yours here.

The kit I used is called “Pirate Booty” by
Love this kit, there are loads of elements which makes it great
 for all your pirate needs!
You can get it here.

You will also need a mask, I used Weescotslass’ mask 141, here.

Font is “Rapscallion”, here.

Remember to sharpen your elements after rotating/resizing, this is a essential for a good looking tag. Check out my Tips and Tricks page for more info.

I used a drop shadow throughout of vertical and horizontal 2, opacity 75, blur 5.

Open a new transparent canvas 600 by 600 pixels and flood fill with white.

Open one of the papers and copy, I used sb_pmt_pirate-booty_pp10.  Make a new layer on your canvas, select all, paste the paper into the selection, deselect and apply the mask.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_frame 7 and paste as a new layer.  Select the interior of the frame with your magic wand and expand the selection by 5.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_pp8 and copy.  Make a new layer on your canvas below the frame layer, paste the paper into the selection, deselect.  Apply the drop shadow to the frame.  Close off your white background and mask layer and merge visible.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_frame 4 and paste as a new layer on the top.  Resize 60% and rotate 70 degrees to the right, move over a little to the left.  Select the interior of each part of the frame with your magic wand and expand the selection by 5, make a new layer below the frame layer and flood fill each section with black.  Do not deselect.

Open your tube and paste as a new layer, resize as needed and position inside the frame, invert the selection and hit delete to remove the excess tube.  Lower the opacity of the tube to around 40 and apply the drop shadow to the frame.  Close off the merged layer and again merge visible.  You can now open your closed layers.

Open your tube again and paste as a new layer, resize as needed, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_palm tree and paste as a new layer.  Mirror, resize 65% and rotate 10 degrees to the left.  Drag down so its below both merged layers, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_rum barrel and paste as a new layer.  Resize 50%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_net 3 and paste as a new layer.  Drag the net up until its between the merged layers.  Mirror, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_compass,  paste as a new layer and drag up so its just below the tube.   Resize 30%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_wheel, paste as a new layer and bring to the top.  Resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_ribbon 2 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_telescope and paste as a new layer.   Mirror, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_treasure chest and paste as a new layer.  Resize 25%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_button 2 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 70%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_gem 1 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_beads and paste as a new layer.   Flip, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_sword and paste as a new layer.  Resize 45% and rotate 10 degrees to the right, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open sb_pmt_pirate-booty_message in bottle and paste as a new layer.  Resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Check the positions of your layers and make any necessary adjustments.  When you are happy,  bring the bottom, left hand branch of the palm tree above the barrel, either by erasing some of the barrel or drawing a selection around the branch then cutting and pasting it above the barrel (if you don’t know how to do this, refer to my Just Gaga tut).

Crop your tag, add your copyright information and text, then export as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or on a transparent background as a png.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions, please email me here.  Don’t forget to send me your result so I can include it in the gallery!
