Naughty or Nice?

Naughty or Nice?

In this tutorial I am using the art of Alicia Mujica.
You require a license to use Alicia’s art,
you can get one here.
Please note that you need a license specific for Alicia’s art.

I am using a kit called “Comfort & Joy” by
This kit is presently part of a bundle of four kits on pre-release sale
which means you can get all four kits for the price of one!
You can get the kits here.

I used Alien Skin, Eye Candy 5, Textures for the brick wall effect.
If you don’t have this plugin there are brick wall brushes and textures available
that will work just as well if you do a search for them.

You will also need a mask, I used Weescotslass’ mask 133, here.

Font of choice.

**********

Don’t forget to sharpen your elements after resizing and rotating, essential for a good looking tag (adjust – sharpness – unsharp mask – radius and clipping 5, strength 50).

Drop shadow used throughout is vertical and horizontal 2, opacity 75, blur 5.

Open a new transparent canvas 550 by 550 pixels and flood fill with white.

Open one of the papers and copy, I used pd-pp-03. Make a new layer on your canvas, select all, paste the paper into the selection and apply the mask. Resize 90%. I lowered the opacity of the mask layer to 65.

Open pd-frame-01 and paste as a new layer. Rotate 90 degrees in either direction and resize 50%.  Click anywhere on the canvas outside of the frame, invert the selection and contract by 1.  Make a new layer below the frame layer and flood fill with a colour that compliments your tube.

Go back to your frame layer and this time select the interior of the frame with your magic wand, go back to the coloured layer and hit delete to remove the colour from the interior. Do not de-select.

Expand the selection by 1, make a new layer below the coloured layer. Apply Alien Skin, Eye Candy 5, Textures, Brick Wall. Change the colour of the bricks to the same colour as your flood fill colour and the colour of the mortar to a light colour picked from the metalwork on the frame, change the brick height to 20 and the mortar thickness to 20 and hit ok.  Do not de-select.

Now we want to put a deep cut out around the brickwork so it looks like its much further back than the frame. Keeping the selection, make a new layer and go to effects – 3D Effects – Cutout, set the vertical and horizontal to 10, and opacity and blur to 100 and then click on ok. Make another new layer and apply the cut out again, this time changing the vertical and horizontal to -10.  De-select. Close off the background, mask and frame layers and merge visible, re-open the closed layers. Go back to your frame layer and apply the drop shadow.

Open the tube and paste as a new layer, resize as necessary and position her inside the frame. Apply the drop shadow.

Open pd-ribbo03 and paste as a new layer. Resize 55%. Drag the ribbon down until its just above the mask layer. Duplicate twice, close out the copies and position the first ribbon along the top edge of the frame. Open one of the copies, flip it and position over the first ribbon. Open the second copy, rotate 90 degrees to the right and position along the right hand side of the frame. Duplicate this ribbon again, mirror and place in position on top of the other one.  Apply the drop shadow to each ribbon layer.  When you have your tree in position, you will need to go back and erase any of the top ribbons that show on the left hand side of the tree.

Open pd-berries2 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 50%, duplicate and close off the duplicate for now. On the original, rotate 10 degrees to the right and place in position over the ribbons. Open the duplicate and rotate 80 degrees to the right and place in position over the ribbons at the top.  Apply the drop shadow to each layer.

Open pd-santa-hat and paste as a new layer. Drag the hat up so its between the frame and the tube, resize 25%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open pd-leaf-04, paste as a new layer and bring to the top. Resize 30%, place in position on the top, right hand corner of the frame and apply the drop shadow.

Open pd-tree and paste as a new layer. Resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open one of the stars, I used pd-star-02 and paste as a new layer. Resize 15%, place in position on the top of the tree and apply the drop shadow. Don’t forget to erase those bits of ribbon that show on the left.

Open some of the Christmas decorations, resize very small and decorate your tree. Apply the drop shadow to each decoration.

Open pd-gift-01 and paste as a new layer. Resize 25%, place at the bottom of the tree and apply the drop shadow.

Open pd-gift-02 and paste as a new layer. Resize also 25%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Check the positioning of all your layers and when you are happy, crop your tag and resize if required. Add your copyright information and text and export as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or on a transparent background as a png.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions, please email me here. I would love to see your result and put it on the gallery!
