About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am Vivienne, living in the UK and married with a son who now lives in Perth, Australia and a daughter who has given me two gorgeous grandsons! Paint Shop has been my hobby for more years than I can remember and I love making tags. I have always loved doing tutorials written by others and a couple of years ago started writing them myself. As well as tag tutorials, I also have a Tips and Tricks page where you will find tutorials on basic Paint Shop techniques. I hope you enjoy my blog and have fun with my tutorials. Please be sure also to check out the Tag Gallery and see some of the awesome results to the tutorials!

In this tutorial I am using the beautiful art of Angela Newman.
You require a license to use Angela’s art,
you can one here.

This time I am using Broken Angel Creation’s
part of the collab “Digital Chaos”.
This is an awesome collab with fourteen kits by fourteen designers,
you can get it here.
Thank you Broken Angel, this is a beautiful kit to work with!

You will require a mask, I used Wee Scots Lass’ mask 44.
You can get it here.

You will also require Toadies Ommadawn plugin, here.

Font used is Big Fish Ensemble, here.

Don’t forget to sharpen your elements after resizing and rotating, essential for a good looking tag (adjust – sharpness – unsharp mask – radius and clipping 5, strength 50).

Drop shadow used – vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 70, blur 10.

Open a new transparent canvas 600 by 550 pixels and flood fill with white.

Make a new layer and select all. Open Paper02_BAC_DigitalChaos, copy the paper,  paste into the selection and apply the mask.

Open Frame01_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Mirror and resize 70%, move to the left slightly.

Open your tube, paste it as a new layer and drag it down below the frame layer, mirror, resize if needed and position inside the frame. Apply the drop shadow. Go back to your frame layer,  select the interior with your magic wand and expand the selection by 10. Invert the selection, go back to your tube layer and hit delete. Do not de-select.  Lower the opacity of the tube layer to around 50%.

Open the paper again, copy, make a new layer below the tube layer and invert the selection. Paste the paper into the selection. Go back to the frame layer and apply the drop shadow.

Close off the background layer, merge visible and then re-open the background.

Open Clock_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 60%, drag below the merged layer, place in position on the right hand side and apply the drop shadow.

Open Butterfly02_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 80% and rotate to the left 50 degrees. Place in position on the left hand side and apply the drop shadow.  Erase any part of the layer that shows on the bottom and right hand side of the frame.

Open StoneSplatter_BAC_Digital Chaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 65 and duplicate a few times. Drag these layers down to above the mask layer, flip/mirror some of the layers and position nicely around the tag. Apply the drop shadow to each layer.

Open Tassle_BAC_DigitalChaos, paste as a new layer and bring it to the top. Resize 70%, hang over the corner of the frame and apply the drop shadow.  Erase the part that would be hanging on the back of the frame.

Open your tube and paste as a new layer. Resize as required, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open some of the flowers, resize them and position around the back of your tube. I used two copies of Flower02_BAC_DigitalChaos resized 40% and Flower01_BAC_DigitalChaos, also resized 40%.

Open Bow02_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 50%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open Lock_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 40%, place in position on the right hand side below any flowers and apply the drop shadow.

Open CoffeeCup_BAC_DigitalChaos, paste as a new layer and bring to the top. Resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open Butterfly01_BAC_DigitalChaos and paste as a new layer. Resize 25% and duplicate. Rotate the duplicate 70 degrees to the right. Place the butterflies into position and apply the drop shadow to each.

Ok, the next part of the tutorial is for more advanced paintshop users, you can miss this part out of course but I hope you give it a try!!

Close off the bottom white layer. Right click on your tag and “copy merged”. Right click again and “paste as a new layer”, bring this layer to the top while we work on it. You can now re-open your bottom white layer. Resize the merged layer 60% and apply Toadies Ommadawn with the following settings:

                                                Cell width                                  15

                                                Cell height                                 15

                                                Cell “a” sharp/soft                    234

                                                Cell Edges On/Off                    17

We are going to make this layer look like a floor and need to put it into perspective. Activate your pick tool (in older versions of Paintshop this is called the deform tool). You will see some nodes show around the layer, hold down your control key and pull one of the bottom corner nodes right out to the side (holding down the control key will make both corners pull out equally).  When you pull out the nodes, you will pull the nodes off the canvas, make sure you don’t pull the layer off or it will have a sharp edge. When you are happy with this, hold down the top centre node and push it down so its about two thirds the height. I have done some screenshots below.

When you are done, position this layer on the bottom part of the tag using mine for reference, drag it down to above the mask layer and lower the opacity to around 60%.

Crop your tag and resize as required. Apply your copyright information and text and then export as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or as a png on a transparent backround.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions, please email me here.
