Something Fishy

In this tutorial I used the art of
I just love Jeff’s cats!
You need a license to use them, available at

I used a gorgeous kit called Suntans and Souvenirs from
This is a really gorgeous kit and, as with all Dee’s kits, is absolute huge!
You can purchase the kit at

I used mask 480 from

For the word “fishy” you will need the windows font
Impact.

Text font is

Scroll to the bottom for another version of the tag using the art of
Barbara Jensen.

Unless noted, I used a drop shadow of vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 65, blur 10.

Open a new transparent canvas 650 by 600 and fill with white.

Make a new layer, select all, paste paper 4 into the selection, deselect and apply the mask, resize 95%.

Paste element 34, resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste frame 5 and resize it 45%.  Select the interior of the frame with your magic wand, expand the selection by 20,  make a new layer below the frame and paste paper 11 into it, deselect, apply the drop shadow to the frame, merge it down onto the paper and move into position.

Paste element 46, resize 50%, drag below the merged layer and position so it shows on the left, duplicate and position the duplicate on the right, apply a drop shadow to each changing the blur to 5.

Paste element 12 above the merged layer, resize 70%, place in position and apply the drop shadow (remember to change the settings back).

Paste element 13a, resize 30% and mirror, place in position and apply the drop shadow

Paste element 35, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 22, resize 50%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 82, resize 30% and rotate 15 degrees to the left, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 53b, resize 50%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 85a, resize 35%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 25, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste spray 3, resize 40% and position on one of the fish hooks.

Paste element 33, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 73, resize 40%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 19, resize 30%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste the tube and, resizing as needed, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Check your layers now and make any necessary adjustments leaving room at the bottom for the wood the cat is sitting on.

Paste spray 4, resize 90% and position above the fish.

Paste element 36, resize 65%, drag it right down to just above the mask, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste element 44, resize 80% and position below element 36, duplicate, drag the duplicate above element 36 and place in position.

Paste element 45b and 45c on the top, resize 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow to each.

Open the Impact font, close off the foreground colour and set background to any colour that shows up and type the word “fishy”, use the nodes to get the text the correct size then turn it to a raster layer and move it down below the merged layer.  Select the font, float and defloat it, invert the selection, paste paper 1 as a new layer, resize it 50%, position it on the text and hit delete to remove the excess, deselect.   Delete the original text layer, apply an inner bevel to the font as in my screenshot below, apply the drop shadow and change the blend mode to “Overlay”.  Be careful the text does not go over the edge of the mask as it will change the overlay look, use your pick tool on the mask to make it fit.

When you are done, crop your tag if needed, add your copyright information and text, then export on a transparent background as a png.

Here is another example of the tutorial using the
bonus tube "Sun Baked" from
Barbara Jensen.
