America the Beautiful

In this tutorial I used the layered tube “Lion’s Den” from pack 57 by
Barbara Jensen.
You can purchase the tube at

I used a beautiful kit called “America the Beautiful” by
You can purchase the kit at Mitrella’s store

I used the template “America” by

You will need a background mask, I used mask 28, also from

Font of Choice.

This tutorial is for advanced users of Paint Shop.

Please be sure to check out my “About my tutorials” page if this is the first tutorial of mine you have followed, thank you.

I used two drop shadows, one of vertical and horizontal 0, opacity 100 and blur 10 which I will call shadow 1 and the second of vertical and horizontal 2, opacity 75, blur 5 which I will call shadow 2.

Open the template, duplicate it and close the original.  Delete the “info” layer.  Select the red and blue colours from the kit as foreground and background colours in your materials palette, it doesn’t matter which way round they are.

Select “teal circle”, float and defloat it, make a new layer, fill the selection with red, deselect and apply shadow 1, then delete the original layer.

Select “grey circle”, float and defloat it as before, make a new layer, copy paper 10 and paste it into the selection, deselect, apply shadow 1 and delete the original layer.

Repeat the above with “taupe strip” using paper 2 and shadow 1.

Repeat again with “grey strip” using paper 3 and shadow 1.

Repeat with “taupe rectangle” filling the selection with the blue colour.

Repeat with “light blue frame” filling the selection with paper 11.  Drag the rectangle you filled with blue above this frame layer and apply shadow 1 to both layers.

Make a new layer above these two layers and fill it with red.  Select “red ribbon”, float and defloat it, invert the selection, go back to the layer below it that you filled with red and hit delete, deselect and delete the “red ribbon” layer.

Make another layer and fill with blue, then select “blue” ribbon, float and defloat and hit delete on the blue layer, deselect and delete the “blue ribbon” layer.  Merge your new blue layer down onto your new red layer and apply shadow 2, then apply shadow 2 to “white stars”.

Merge “left teal” down onto “right teal” and then merge down again onto “middle teal”.  We will come back to this merged layer.

Click on “dotted circles” to activate it, make a new layer above it and fill with blue.  Select, float and defloat “America backing”, invert the selection and hit delete on the blue layer, deselect and delete the “America backing” layer.

Make another layer, fill with red, select “red stripes” and repeat the above hitting delete on the red layer, deselect  and delete “red stripes”.  Merge your new red layer down onto the blue layer below it and apply shadow 2.  Click on “America white” to activate it, apply shadow 2 and then merge it down onto the red/blue merged layer.

Delete “Beautiful emboss” and “Beautiful d/s” layers.

Click on “Beautiful white” to activate it, make a new layer above it and fill with blue, float and defloat “Beautiful blue”, invert the selection and hit delete on your blue layer, deselect.  Delete “Beautiful blue”, merge your new blue layer down onto “Beautiful white” and apply shadow 2.

Apply shadow 2 to “The” layer.   Now merge your three “word” layers together, you can either merge them down one onto the other or close all the other layers off and merge visible.

Resize 80% with “all layers checked” then enlarge your canvas to 800 x 700 pixels with the template centred refill the bottom layer with white.

Paste element 10 from the kit as a new layer on your canvas just above the white bottom layer and position it just at the bottom of the template.  Activate your Pick tool (deform tool in older versions of Paint Shop).  You will see nodes form around the flag, hold down the “Ctrl” key and pull the front, right hand node out a little (holding the Ctrl key will cause both sides to pull out the same amount”.  Release the Ctrl key and push the bottom middle node up a little to narrow the flag.  You should now have something like my screenshot below.  When you are happy with it, unsharp mask on the flap and apply shadow 1.

Paste your tube as a new layer between the template and the merged text layer and place in position. I moved the text layer down a little.  Resize your tube as needed, place in position and apply shadow 2.  I resized my tube 85%.

Go back to those teal rectangles that you  merged together, float and defloat the layer, make a new layer, fill with black and delete the original layer.  Open your tube again or close up if you have one and paste it as a new layer, place in position, invert the selection and hit delete to remove the excess, deselect.  I used the close up also resized 85%.  Change the blend mode on the tube to “Hard Light” and lower the opacity to around 50.

Now use some of the elements from the kit to decorate behind the main tube and apply shadow 2 to each of them.  I used:

Element 27 resized 75%.

Element 34 resized 35%.

Element 38 resized 75%.

Element 33 resized 45%.

Element 22 resized 50%.

Element 6 resized 40% and rotated 20 degrees to the right.

Paste element 17 as a new layer, resize 80% and rotate 90 degrees to the right, position to the left of the tube, duplicate, move the duplicate over to the right, erase the parts that overlap hiding the join behind the tube and apply shadow 2 to each.

Paste element 24 as a new layer, resize 45%, place in position an apply shadow 2.

Paste element 18 as a new layer, resize 75%, place in position and apply shadow 2.

Paste element 3 as a new layer,  resize 75%, drag right down below the flag and position on the right erasing any part that shows below the bottom of the flag.  Duplicate, mirror the duplicate and position opposite on the left.

Activate the white background layer, make a new layer above it and select all, copy paper 3 and paste it into the selection, deselect and apply the mask.  Use your Pick tool on the mask as you did before pulling at one of the top outer nodes to pull both sides out a little.

When you are done, crop and resize your tag, add you copyright information and text, then export on a transparent background as a png.
