Cap'n Claw

In this tutorial I used the fantastic art of
Jeff Haynie!
I just adore Jeff’s cats!
You need a license to use his art, available at

I used the kit “Dark Ocean” by
This is my favourite kit by Jessica and it's the second
tutorial I have written using it.
You will find the kit at

You will also need a mask, I used mask 84 by
4
I used the font

Please check out my “About my tutorials” page before you start if this is the first tutorial of mine you have followed.

Unless noted, I used a drop shadow of vertical and horizontal 5, opacity 85, blur 10.

Open a new transparent canvas 650 by 625 pixels and fill with white.

Copy Paper5-GI_DarkOcean, make a new layer on your canvas, select all, paste the paper into the selection, deselect and apply the mask.

Paste Frame8-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer and resize 50%.  Select the interior of the element with your magic wand and expand the selection by 20, make a new layer below it, copy paper 5 again and paste it into the selection, deselect.  Apply a nice deep shadow on the frame of vertical and horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 25, repeat the drop shadow and merge the frame down onto the paper.  After this we will be using the drop shadow of vertical and horizontal 5, opacity 85, blur 10.

Paste Wire-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 55%, drag down below the merged layer and position, duplicate, merge the duplicate down onto the original and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Grass-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer and bring to the top,  resize 65% and position on the right, duplicate, resize the duplicate another 90%, drag it below the merged frame layer and position on the left, apply the drop shadow to each layer.

Paste OldNet-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer and bring to the top, resize 50%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Lamp-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer,  resize 28% and apply the drop shadow, place in position and erase some of the loop at the top so it looks as if its hooked over the pole.

Paste your tube as a new layer, place in position and apply the drop shadow.  I resized my tube 60% and changed the blend mode to “Hard Light” (I have checked with CDO and am told this is fine to do as the tube is a mono colour).  When I had finished and had all my layers in position, I erased the part of the old net layer that went across the tube's face.

Paste Wheel-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 30%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Barrel-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 30%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Parchment-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 20% and rotate 20 degrees to the left, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Hourglass-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 20%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Box-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 30%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Bottle-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 20%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Ship-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer,  resize 35%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Paste Waves-GI_DarkOcean as a new layer, resize 70% and apply the drop shadow.  Place in position in front of the ship and use your pick tool (called Deform in previous versions) to push the ends of the element in so it’s not so wide.

Check the positions of your layers and make any necessary adjustments.

Duplicate the ship, flip the duplicate, drag it below the waves and position as a reflection, activate the mask later, float and defloat it, invert the selection and hit delete on the boat reflection, deselect.

When you are all done, crop your tag, add your copyright information and text, then export as a png on a transparent background.
