About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I am Vivienne, living in the UK and married with a son who now lives in Perth, Australia and a daughter who has given me two gorgeous grandsons! Paint Shop has been my hobby for more years than I can remember and I love making tags. I have always loved doing tutorials written by others and a couple of years ago started writing them myself. As well as tag tutorials, I also have a Tips and Tricks page where you will find tutorials on basic Paint Shop techniques. I hope you enjoy my blog and have fun with my tutorials. Please be sure also to check out the Tag Gallery and see some of the awesome results to the tutorials!

Christmas Star

In this tutorial I used the gorgeously quirky art of Alicia Mujica.
You need a license to use Alicia's art,
they are available here.

The kit I used is called "Blue Christmas" by
Gemini Creationz.
This is a beautiful kit in lovely shades of blue and has many
more elements than I have used.
For details on where to get the kit, check out
Gemini's site here.

You will also need a mask, I used Weescotslass' mask 133,  here.

Font is Amonite, here.

Remember to sharpen up your elements after resizing/rotating as otherwise they will be a little blurry; for more info, check out my Tips and Tricks page.

I used a drop shadow throughout of vertical and horizontal 2, opacity 60, blur 7.

Open a new transparent canvas 650 by 600 pixels and flood fill with white.

Open gemini_bluexmas_p5 and copy.  Make a new layer on your canvas, select all, paste the paper into the selection, deselect and apply the mask.  Resize 90%.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e69 and paste as a new layer.  The element is larger than the canvas so you wont see it.  Resize it 9%, select the interior with your magic wand and expand the selection by 5, make a new layer below it and flood fill with a colour from the tube, I used #ceecf5.  Deselect, apply the drop shadow to the frame and merge it down onto the coloured layer. Move it very slightly higher and to the left.

Open your tube and paste as a new layer, resize as needed (I resized 29%), place it in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e37 and paste as a new layer.  Drag down below the merged layer and place in position so it shows at the top, left hand side.  Duplicate, resize the duplicate 90% and move down so it shows at the bottom, right.  Apply the drop shadow to both layers.

Open gemini_bluexmas-e36 and paste as a new layer.  Place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e38 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e2 and paste as a new layer.   Drag up above the merged layer,  resize 80%, place in position, erase the bottom part that shows below the tube and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e27 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 70%, duplicate and flip the duplicate, place both elements into position and apply the drop shadow to each.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e65, paste as a new layer and bring to the top.  Resize 70%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.  With your oblong selection tool, draw a selection around the top part of the element and hit delete, deselect, right click on your canvas and "paste as a new layer", the part you deleted will come back on a new layer.  Drag this part below the tube and join the two pieces together so it looks like the swirl goes around her.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e66 and paste as a new layer making sure its on the top.  Resize 80% and place in position.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e61 and paste as a new layer.  Rotate 60 degrees to the right and then flip, resize 65%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e35 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.  We will come back to these last to elements later.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e6 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 55%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e22 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 25%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e39 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 33%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas-e20 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 23%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e21 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 23%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open gemini_bluexmas_e23 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 23%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Check the positions of your layers and make any necessary adjustments.

Open Gemini_bluexmas_e30 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 70%, flip and drag down until its just above the mask layer.  Duplicate twice and arrange around the edge of the tag erasing any odd ones that look out of place.  Apply the drop shadow to each layer.

No go back to e61, that’s the ribbon.  Zoom into your  tag so its large and you can see better what you are doing, lower the opacity of the ribbon so you can see the stars on the tube through it, then erase the part of the ribbon that covers the stars so it looks like the ribbon is below them.  Do the same with e35, the lights.

When you are done, crop your tag, add your copyright information and text, then export as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or on a transparent background as a png.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions, please email me here.  As always, I would love to see your result and include it in the gallery!
