In this tutorial I am using the art of Susan Justice aka McKivergan.
You need a license to use Susan’s art,
I purchased mine from AMI but they are now available here.
I am using a beautiful kit called “Holiday Ice” by
You can get the kit here.
Thank you Sarah!
You will need Animation Shop and a snow animation if you wish to do the animation.
I have uploaded the snow animation here.
You will also need a mask, I used Monti’s circle mask, here.
Font used is Arlekino, here.
Remember to sharpen your elements after resizing/rotating to take away the blurriness (adjust – sharpen – unsharp mask, radius and clipping 5, strength 50).
I re-coloured the paper and some elements to complement the tube.
Open a new transparent canvas 650 by 600 pixels and flood fill with white.
Open one of the papers and copy, I used sb_pmt_holiday-ice-pp8. Make a new layer on your canvas and select all, paste the paper into the selection, de-select and apply Monti’s mask, resize 90%.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-snowglobe and paste as a new layer. Resize 85% and rotate 4 degrees to the right. Apply a drop shadow vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 40, blur 10.
Open your tube and paste as a new layer, resize as needed to fit inside the globe and place in position. Apply a drop shadow vertical and horizontal 2, opacity 60, blur 5.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-decor3 and paste as a new layer. Resize 75%, drag down below the globe layer, place in position and apply the same drop shadow as you did for the globe.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-tree2 and paste as a new layer. Resize 75%, place in position and apply a drop shadow vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 30, blur 10.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-tree3 and paste as a new layer. Resize 50%, place in position and apply the last drop shadow.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-snow, paste as a new layer and bring to the top. Resize 70% and apply Monti’s circle mask. Position along the bottom of the globe.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice-tree and paste as a new layer. Resize 45%, place in position and apply the last drop shadow.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice_branch and paste as a new layer. Resize 50%, place in position and apply the last drop shadow.
Open sb_pmt_holiday-ice_bow3 and paste as a new layer. Resize 45%, place in position and apply the last drop shadow.
Crop your tag and resize if required. Add your copyright information and text. If you are not doing the animation, export as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or on a transparent background as a png.
If you are continuing with the animation, close off the snow globe layer and all the layers above it leaving just the background, mask and the two tree layers. Click on one of those layers to activate and merge visible. Close off that layer and open your copyright info and text layers, the bow, branch, tree and snow layers. Click on one of those layers and merge visible. Open the close layers. Your layers palette should now look like my screenshot below, I have renamed the layers to make it easier.
Close off the merged top layer so you can see what you are doing. Take your freehand selection tool and draw a selection around the globe as in my screenshot below.
Open the snow file in Animation Ahop. Go to file – export frames – to Paint Shop Pro. The animation will now open in layers in Paint Shop. Go back to Animation Shop and again go to file – export – break link with exported frames.
Back in Paint Shop, click on the tube layer to activate it, then copy each of the snow layers and paste them as new layers onto your tag being careful not to move any otherwise the snow will jump about. When you have pasted all the layers, invert the selection and hit delete on each layer to remove the excess snow, de-select. Open the closed top layer.
Close off all the snow layers apart from the last one, layer 10. Right click on your tag and “copy merged”, paste in animation shop “as a new animation”. Back Paint Shop, close off that snow layer and open the one below, again right click and “copy merged”, in animation shop “paste before current frame”. Do this with each of the snow layers.
Run your tag through the optimization wizard and save as a gif.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, if you have any questions, please email me here. A very Merry Christmas to you all!
